WESTPORT–Golden Globe winner Marsha Mason and Tony Award winner James Naughton have joined the cast of “The Pancake Club,” a play reading to be presented by the Westport Country Playhouse at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12.
They will appear with Tony Award winner Judith Ivey, whose role in the new, two-act comedy was announced earlier.
The play was written by Charlotte Booker and is being directed by Mark Shanahan, the Playhouse’s artistic director, as part of the Script in Hand series.
The show’s title refers to a group of senior men who meet regularly in a small-town diner. In the play, Brenda (Ivey) struggles with the sudden death of her oldest friend, the Club members squabble over the eulogy, the widow refuses to grieve, a mysterious stranger threatens the town’s equilibrium and Brenda’s only daughter teeters on the brink of a meltdown.
The circumstances force Brenda to face the question: Does anybody ever truly grow up?
Mason, in addition to winning Golden Globes for “The Goodbye Girl” and “Cinderella Liberty,” has been nominated for four Academy Awards. She has starred and appeared in many Broadway and Off-Broadway shows as well as movies.
Naughton won Tonys for “City of Angels” and the revival of “Chicago.” In addition to Broadway, film and TV roles, he has many Playhouse directing and acting credits.
The cast also includes John Hutton, John Ottavino and Nicole Shalhoub. Stage directions will be read by Faith Sandberg. Tickets are $35. For full details, visit: https://www.westportplayhouse.org/show/january/
