WESTPORT–A day after their originally scheduled and subsequently postponed senior night, Staples came into an early Saturday morning matchup in front of pajama-wearing Wrecker fans against the 5-7 Trumbull Eagles.
Both teams went back and forth in the early going, with Trumbull star Sean Racette and Staples’ own star senior captain Ryan Phelps leading the way in the first. Trumbull, behind a couple of three-point shots, took an early 19-14 lead.
Staples would battle back though in the second, behind continued excellent play from Phelps, senior captain Derek Sale and junior big man Chris Zajac. At the half, the teams were tied at 32 apiece.
In the third quarter, Staples outscored the Eagles by 7, to put them up 51-43. In the fourth, the Staples defense loosened up a bit and allowed the Eagles 20 points. But, Staples scored 20 points themselves and booked their third win in a row, 71-63.

Phelps, making a strong case for first team All-FCIAC, scored 30 points total on the day, with Sale adding 18 and Zajac scoring 11. Senior captain Ryan Thompson added 10 on the day, as the Wreckers put this one in the record books as a win.
Staples, now 10-4 for the season, will travel downstate to take on the 8-5 Stamford Black Knights, who are having a most uneven season, at 6 p.m tomorrow.
