WESTPORT–Staples High School and Bedford Middle School temporarily activated security protocols Thursday morning following reports of a man acting erratically along Long Lots Road, according to Westport Superintendent of Schools Thomas Scarice.
The Westport Police Department received reports shortly before 8 a.m. of a man yelling at vehicles in the area. Officers, including members of the department’s School Security Unit, responded to assess the situation and identify the individual, Scarice said in a message to the school community.
Both schools were placed in temporary holds while police coordinated with school administrators. The situation was addressed, allowing the schools to return to normal operations.
Scarice said the incident highlighted the importance of coordination between local police and school administrators, adding that security protocols are intended to protect students and staff and are implemented based on the information available at the time.
“The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priorities,” Scarice wrote, thanking police and school security personnel for their response.
