MANCHESTER, CT–Staples High runner Oliver Samuel easily out-paced the competition to capture the Class LL state cross country championship at Wickham Park in Manchester on Saturday.

Samuel, in his senior year, finished the 5K course in a time of 16:12.1, finishing 17 seconds ahead of the next fastest runner.

Staples, with 83 points, placed second as a team behind Greenwich with 32 points. Staples’ Harrison Sydor came in ninth in 16:38.1 and Luke Cooper was 11th in 16:48.9. Rounding out the Wreckers’ top five were Maxwell Benke in 28th with a time of 17:30.0 and Samuel Bermeister in 34th in 17:33.0.
