WESTPORT — The Staples boys tennis team is on a roll. Aces of the court in their last series of matches, the Wreckers have surged to 10-2 with a five-match winning streak.
They aim to continue their winning ways when play resumes against Fairfield Warde (suspended by rain earlier this week) at 10 a.m. Saturday in Fairfield.
The Staples’ streak started with a 6-1 win over Wilton on April 23, and continued with a 7-0 triumph over Bridgeport Central on April 25, a 5-2 victory at Fairfield Ludlowe on Tuesday, setting back Darien 4-3 Wednesday and defeating Trumbull 5-2 Thursday.
In the Ludlowe match, Ludlowe’s No. 1 Pearson Biggs defeated Lucas Ceballos-Cala 6-0, 4-6, 6-1. Staples No. 2 player Brett Lampert defeated Billy Seward 6-1, 6-1. At third singles, Ludlowe’s Griggs Moran defeated Robert Jacob 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. At fourth singles, Staples player Alex Cozzolino defeated Ethan Demaria 6-2, 6-2.
The Wreckers swept the doubles matches against the Fairfielders with the No. 1 duo of Mattie Guadarrama/Hayden Frey defeating Scotty Master/Drew Phymm 3-6, 6-4, 6-3; No. 2 Jared Even/Clint Graham winning over Travis Stuart/Kris Yuan 6-1, 6-4, and the No. 3 tandem of Shreyas Gorre/Aleko Vergakis defeating Hayden Dudley/James Zandri 6-1, 6-3.
The next day in Darien, the Wreckers pulled out a hard-fought 4-3 victory. A top singles, Staples’ Noah Wolff defeated Will Donnelly 6-4, 7-6. No. 2 Darien player Kai Collins defeated Lampert 7-5, 6-1. At third singles, Ceballos-Cala beat Rithik Melwani 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. At fourth singles, Darien’s Rowan Bepler defeated Jacob 6-3, 6-4.
The Wreckers’ top doubles team of Guadarrama/Frey came out on top, beating Dallas White/Andrew Li 6-1, 6-3. Darien’s No. 2 duo of Liam Tomaszewski/Gregg Garabet beat Staples players Even/Graham 7-6, 7-6. At third doubles, Vergakis/Gorre defeated Darien’s Will Panda/Hari Palanippan 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.

After completing the Warde match Saturday, Staples returns home to face Danbury at 4 p.m. Monday. (Game schedules are subject to change; click for the latest updates.)
