Editor’s note: following is an opinion submitted by Westporter Carole Reichhelm.
The election is here, and I’ve been thinking a lot about why I’m voting for certain candidates. Foremost I think change is almost always good. Fresh ideas and new perspectives renew our leaders and re-engage them with ever-smarter concepts.
I know Michele Paquette will fulfill her determination to provide productive change, to be transparent, to represent the very best for Westport. I’ve come to know her well these last six months working on the Alliance. She quickly grasps the issues and listens to all viewpoints before forming her own opinions. She’s diplomatic and when necessary, firm.
Michele stood up to oppose Text Amendment C in 2022 and challenged the Hamlet proposal at every turn to defend Saugatuck’s character and resident’s needs. She will continue to ask tough questions and speak out for transparent right-sized development for Saugatuck, and all of Westport.
Her research, analysis and conclusion skills are exceptional. She’s looked at building plans and long, painful reports and quickly distilled data into insightful conclusions. Michele was an important part of our winning team. On several occasions, I think she offered the P and Z analytical perspectives and insights they might not have considered before.
As our Planning & Zoning commissioner, Michele will put residents first, bring the ability to balance big picture thinking with everyday concerns, ask tough questions, and advocate for thoughtful development that reflects Westport’s values.
I encourage everyone to include her in their vote. She’s just the fresh change the Planning and Zoning Commission needs. And she’s a bipartisan player. She cares about what’s good for Westport and will make an excellent commissioner. I’m proud to endorse her.
