WESTPORT–The Democratic Town Committee elected officers at its meeting last week.
Michelle Mechanic was elected as chair, Robin Weinberg as vice chair, Peter Propp as secretary and Alan Shinbaum as treasurer.
The DTC represents the enrolled Democrats in the Town of Westport. For the last election cycle, in November 2025, about 40% of Westport voters were registered Democrats. An equal share were unaffiliated and the balance, about 20%, were registered as Republicans.
An important role the DTC plays is in endorsing party candidates for local and state offices.
For instance, on May 19, 2026, the 70 members of the DTC will be gathered for a simple-majority vote on which Democratic candidate to endorse for the state’s D-136 representative race (for the seat occupied by Jonathan Steinberg). If the vote is tied, the Chair will break the tie (though flipping a coin is allowable by state guidelines).
