WESTPORT–Tinted car windows and an allegedly stolen license plate tripped up a Bridgeport man wanted on a charge of violating probation on an assault conviction, Westport police said.
An officer stopped Jachai Dicks, 28, driving in Westport at 9:27 a.m. Saturday, when he saw the windows that allegedly bore an illegal tint. A license plate reader also flagged the plate on the vehicle Dicks drove as one that had been reported stolen, police said.
“Investigation determined that the car was not registered, not insured, and DMV records showed that Dicks was operating it while his license was under suspension,” police said in a statement.
Worse news came for Dick when a further check showed a warrant that a Bridgeport Superior Court judge had issued three days earlier charging Dicks with the probation violation.
Dicks had been convicted of first-degree assault in Bridgeport on March 21, 2019. Court records show he was sentenced on May 24 of that year for the felony assault and for carrying a pistol without a permit, also a felony, in connection with a July 20, 2016, incident.
The alleged probation violation came on March 30, 2025, when Dicks was arrested in Westport on a charge of second-degree breach of peace, a misdemeanor.
On Saturday, in addition to violation of probation, Dicks was charged with operating an unregistered motor vehicle, theft of a registration marker plate, illegal operation of a motor vehicle without minimum insurance coverage, illegal operation of a motor vehicle with a suspended operator’s license and illegal window tinting. Unable to make a $61,000 bond, Dicks was taken to Stamford Superior Court for arraignment on Monday morning.
He is due in court in Bridgeport on Oct. 1 for the violation of probation charge and in Stamford on Oct. 14 for the Westport charges.
