WESTPORT–The registrars of voters, Deborah Guskin-Greenberg and Maria L. Signore, have reversed their decision to reduce Westport’s polling sites from five to one.
In a release today they said “In response to the press release issued on July 8, and after carefully considering the feedback and concerns expressed by members of the Westport community, the Registrars of Voters and the Town Clerk have decided to return to the original polling places.”
Michelle Mechanic, the Chair of the Democratic Town Committee, said “I believe the Office of the Registrar was extremely well intentioned when initially deciding to make the change to a single polling place. That said, change comes with unpredictability that can be concerning – especially during such a consequential time politically. Accordingly, I think returning to the original polling places was the correct decision for this particular election cycle, but I do believe it’s an idea we should revisit in the future.”
The head of the Republican Town Committee, Patrizia Zucaro, did not respond to an inquiry lodged by Westport Journal.
The rules around absentee voting and early voting rules can be found here.
Election day votes will be taken at these five locations:
- Districts 1 and 2: Saugatuck Elementary School, 170 Riverside Ave.
- Districts 3 and 8: Coleytown Middle School, 255 North Ave.
- Districts 4 and 5: Greens Farms Elementary School, 17 Morningside Side Drive South.
- Districts 6 and 7: Long Lots Elementary School, 13 Hyde Lane.
- District 9: Westport Library, 20 Jesup Road.
The registrars stress that any Westporters with questions regarding this change, can reach them directly by phone at (203) 341-1115.
