WESTPORT–A 41-year-old Bronx man is accused of running his own type of pro-golf tour, stealing tens of thousands of dollars in golf clubs and related equipment from golf clubs and sporting goods stores in a spree that has left him in the rough with police departments in several towns, including Westport.
Matthew Berman turned himself in to Westport Police on Aug. 21. He was charged with breaking into the Longshore Golf Course on Compo Road South last Sept. 7 and stealing golf clubs and golf bags worth $12,498.70, town police said.
Norwalk, Stamford, Millwood
That arrest came about a month after Berman turned himself in to Norwalk police on charges that he stole $23,000 worth of golf clubs from Golf Galaxy on Connecticut Avenue in February, according to that city’s police.
He also was arrested in Stamford on April 3, 2025, court records show.
Berman was also arrested outside a deli in Millwood, New York, according to a March 21 post on the Facebook page of the Westchester County Police. He was apprehended while “attempting to sell a Theragun massage device that was stolen from the Mount Kisco Country Club,” according to the post, which was written by the Real Time Crime (RTC) unit, a multi-agency information hub serving Westchester County Police, among other departments.
The RTC said the Mount Kisco Country Club theft was one of two burglaries that had occurred in New Castle, N.Y. Another four were reported in Orangetown, N.Y.
“Task Force members recovered numerous stolen golf items from (Berman’s) home and vehicle along with multiple stolen license plates and an imitation Beretta handgun,” the post says.
In Westport, Berman was charged with third-degree burglary, second-degree larceny and second-degree criminal mischief – charges similar to those he faces from Norwalk and Stamford.
Berman is due in Superior Court in Stamford on Oct. 6 on the three Connecticut cases.
