WESTPORT — Anti-Semitic flyers were scattered in the Partrick Road neighborhood last week, another in a series of hate incidents plaguing Westport since the start of the year.
Police, in a statement Monday afternoon, said they were notified by neighborhood residents that flyers, featuring anti-Semitic content, were thrown onto driveways in the Partrick Road area sometime between the evening of July 19 through July 20. The flyers were contained in plastic bags, weighted down with rice, police said.
The flyers, according to police, had “somewhat random and incoherent” messages, but stated: “Every single asset of abortion is Jewish.”
The flyers also listed prominent Jewish men whose work, the unidentified authors claim, has been responsible for easing restrictions on terminating pregnancies and promoting the availability of contraceptives.
The anti-Semitic flyers are latest examples of hate graffiti and posters reported in town since the beginning of the year. Read about some of those incidents here, here, here and here.
Those earlier incidents promoted racist and/or white supremacist, anti-Jewish sentiments.
First Selectwoman Jennifer Tooker, in Monday’s statement, said, “Westport will use all of its available resources to combat this hate and to strongly message that these statements and sentiments do not have a place here in Westport … Safety is always a top priority.
Harold Bailey Jr., chairman of TEAM Westport, the town’s multi-cultural advocacy committee, said, “This hate-filled vitriol is an assault on the fabric and values of every segment of the Westport community. We all stand in solidarity as Westporters in our firm rejection of both the message and messenger.”
Police Chief Foti Koskinas reminded people to report any similar incidents to police, adding, “We will continue to be transparent and communicate these matters to the public as soon as we are made aware.”
Anyone who might have information about the anti-Semitic flyers — particularly in the Partrick Road area, with surveillance cameras — is asked to contact the Police Department’s Detective Bureau at 203-341-6080.
