WESTPORT — Police are investigating hate-inflected graffiti scrawled on Interstate 95 pillars, near the state’s Saugatuck River boat launch, according to a report at TEAM Westport’s meeting Thursday.

The graffiti — “Reject white guilt,” read one of the spray-painted messages — was discovered earlier in the week and immediately removed, Capt. David Wolf, professional standards commander for the Police Department, told the meeting.

The incident is being investigated, he said, but since there is no video surveillance in the area, it will be challenging to pursue.

The incident comes two months after racist graffiti defaced part of the Riverwalk.

The graffiti was “clearly racially oriented,” said Harold Bailey, the TEAM Westport chairman. “It’s got to stop.”

When someone in the audience commented that police often don’t detail the contents of hate graffiti because it might damage the town’s reputation, Wolf responded, “We would not hide things to protect the image of the town. That is not our position at all.”

Police “absolutely [are] going to look into it,” he said.
