WESTPORT — A Darien woman is accused of stealing more than $9,000 with of clothing from Mitchells department store,

Caroline Montanus, 37, was charged May 9 with third-degree larceny in connection with the incident.

Police were dispatched March 14 to investigate a report filed by the store at 670 Post Road East that a woman, who had taken several pieces of clothing into a dressing room, cut off the security tags and left the store with the items without paying.

Westport police investigating the incident learned that a woman had been arrested for a similar incident at another nearby Mitchells-owned store — presumably, Richards in Greenwich.

Then, using recordings of the store’s video surveillance and information shared with other law-enforcement agencies, investigators were able to identify Montanus as the suspected shoplifter at the Westport store, according to the report.

A warrant for her arrest was issued, and she was taken into custody at the Greenwich Police Department, where she was being held on a similar charge.

Montanus was transported back to Westport Police Department headquarters, where she was formally charged and released after posting $50,000 bond. She is scheduled to be arraigned May 23 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
