WESTPORT — A car fire that spread to the garage of a Sturges Highway home was extinguished by firefighters Saturday night.

The incident, reported shortly after 7:15 p.m. Saturday, was initially reported as a car fire, but fire officials upgraded the response when flames spread to the home’s garage. A total of four engines, a truck company and the shift commander were dispatched to the scene.

The Engine 6 crew, first to arrive, reported a working fire was spreading to the garage, and deployed a hose line to prevent the blaze from extending.

Damage was limited to the vehicle and exterior of the garage, according to the report by Assistant Fire Chief Brian Meadows. After the flames were doused. firefighters checked the dwelling’s interior to ensure the fire had been confined to the garage area.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters from Norwalk and Wilton provided mutual-aid coverage while Westport firefighters were at the Sturges Highway blaze, and Fairfield dispatched a rapid intervention team. Police and an EMS crew were on standby at the scene.

The incident is under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s Office.
