WESTPORT–Westport property owners have another few days to schedule an appointment to review their new property assessments.
The deadline to schedule the appointment with Vision Government Solutions has been extended to Friday, Dec. 26, Town Assessor Paul Friia said. It previously had been set for tomorrow, Dec. 23.
“After conversations with the project manager, we felt that since the original date was so close to the holidays, we would extend it to just after to give people a little more time,” he said.
He expects 8% of property owners to request the informal discussions. That figure was approximately 6% for the two previous evaluations, he said.
Assessments rose sharply since the last revaluation – 61% for residences and 17% for commercial properties, on average. But a higher assessment does not necessarily translate to an increase in the property owner’s tax bill. That is determined by whether the assessment rose by a greater or lesser percentage than the grand list – the total taxable property value in town – and by the budget the town later adopts.

Here’s my advice for anyone sitting down for an informal discussion regarding your Vision Appraisal assessment: if the person’s name is Mary Kate, just get and leave. Cranky? Check. Argumentative? Oh yeah. Dismissive? That’s right. Feels like a parole hearing? Yup. Think Phillis Diller with low blood sugar. Never been treated that way before at one of these hearings. Not cool.
