WESTPORT — There is now a rhyme, as well as many reasons, for getting to know Wheels2U Westport, the shuttle service operated by the Westport Transit District.
That’s because the transit district is sponsoring a limerick contest to promote the service, which provides on-demand rides for commuters from their homes to local railroad stations in the morning and back home in the evening.
Authors of the top seven limericks, as judged by Peter Gold, the district’s director, will be awarded gift certificates to Westport restaurants of their choosing.
The first-place winner will receive a $100 gift certificate; two second-place winners will receive $50 gift certificates, and four third-place winners will receive $25 gift certificates.
The contest is open to all residents of Westport, and there is no limit on the number of entries.
Deadline to submit limericks is March 25. They should be emailed to Gold at pgold@westportct.gov. Entries should have “Limerick Contest” in the email’s subject line, and must include the sender’s name, address and email address.
The limericks become the property of the Westport Transit District, which reserves the right to use submissions to promote operations of the Westport Transit District and Wheels2U Westport, according to the contest rules.
Residents living in the Wheels2U Westport service area can use its ride-sharing app to book a ride between 5:45 and 10 a.m. from their homes to either the Saugatuck or Greens Farms railroad stations, and from 4 and 9:30 p.m. to schedule rides from either station back home.
Rides should be requested about 20 minutes before the desired pickup time.
The fare is $2 when paid with the Wheels2U app.
“Wheels2U Westport provides many benefits,” Gold said in a statement publicizing the limerick contest.
“It’s easy, inexpensive and convenient to use. It comes when you call it, picks you up right at your door, and takes you right to the train platform at the Westport and Greens Farms stations … And it’s a greener way to get to the train.”

If you want to get home from the station
What’s needed is consolidation
Too many districts
Are what restricts us
From getting to our destination.
Simply put, there are too many transit districts serving SWCT – seven between Greenwich and New Haven! That’s nuts. If Westport wants to support transit, then we should support consolidating transit districts so people can actually get where they want or need to go. We don’t live in a bubble so we shouldn’t fund a transit district that keeps us that way.
