Following a disappointing loss to the Warde Mustangs in the FCIAC tournament, Staples entered State Division II tournament play Monday against the 9-11 Sheehan Titans, who were led by senior star Kyron Coviello.
Staples came out fighting and dominated throughout the game on both sides of the court. Staples scored seven points within the first 60 seconds of the game, with several baskets coming off defensive-pressured turnovers. The Titans scored only four points in the first quarter.
Staples then went on a 23-10 run in the second quarter. At the half, Staples held a 41-14 lead, capped off by a Cody Sale baseline jumper at the horn.
Staples opened the third quarter with an 18-0 run, capped off by a Gavin Rothenberg three-pointer.
The dominance continued throughout the final quarter, with virtually everyone on the bench seeing time on the court. Final: Staples 70, Sheehan 23.
Derek Sale led the team with 13 points and Staples’ All-FCIAC First Team star Ryan Phelps tallied 12 points and six rebounds. Chris Zajac, All-FCIAC Second Teamer, had five points and 10 rebounds.
Staples advanced to the second round and will take on the Waterford Lancers, with a 16-6 record, tomorrow at home at 6:30 p.m.
