WESTPORT — The heat’s on … really, really ON.

A sizzling outlook for the coming week is in store for Westport and much of the Northeast, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures from Tuesday through next Monday are expected to soar above 90 degrees each day, the weather service said in issuing a “Hazardous Weather Outlook / Heat Advisory” on Tuesday.

Other factors during that period could, at times, spark a heat index that feels as though it’s registering 100 degrees or more.

Skies from Tuesday through early next week are expected to be generally sunny, with the exception of Thursday afternoon and evening when the NWS says there is a chance of showers and thunderstorms.

While daytime high temperatures are forecast to crest in the mid-90s, nighttime lows will drop only to the low-70s, according to the weather service.

In response, Gov. Ned Lamont on Monday activated the state’s “extreme hot weather protocol” to promote the availability of cooling centers for anyone who needs relief, particularly the elderly and very young.

Call the statewide information line at “2-1-1” for assistance.

“I strongly urge anyone who needs a place to cool off to call 2-1-1 to find their nearest available cooling center,” Lamont said in his statement.

“Everyone should take the necessary precautions as the heat rises over the next several days,” he said. “A few steps can greatly reduce heat-related issues, especially for the elderly, the very young and people with respiratory ailments who are more susceptible to the effects of high temperatures.”

The Westport Center for Senior Services, 21 Imperial Ave., is expected to be available locally as a cooling center, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., according to announcement from the center Monday. Call 203-341-5099 for more information.

The center also is circulating a list of tips and resources to help people stay healthy during the heat wave.

The Westport Library, 20 Jesup Road, also is a local spot where people can seek relief from the weather.
