WESTPORT — Powerful wind gusts, blowing frigid temperatures across the region overnight, have knocked out power to thousands across the state, but Westport — as of early Monday — has been spared the storm’s brunt.

With wind gusts clocked up to 50 mph, which the National Weather Service warns could last to Monday evening, nearly 13,000 customers across Eversource’s statewide base had lost service as of 6 a.m. Monday.
In Westport, at that hour, only 46 outages were reported among 12,786 total customers, according to the power company.
Nearby communities were not so lucky. There were 920 outages in Norwalk and 393 in Wilton at 6 o’clock Monday morning, but Weston had only 39. Fairfield, served by United Illuminating, was reporting 127 outages.
The high winds are the leading edge of a severely cold front moving across the region.
High temperatures Monday are expected to reach only the freezing mark, with the blustery winds registering wind-chill values of between 10 and 20 degrees, according to the weather service.
Overnight temperatures will plunge to between zero and 10 degrees.
Daytime readings will be even colder Tuesday and Wednesday, the NWS forecasts, with highs expected only in the upper-20s.
The stretch of cold weather prompted Gov. Ned Lamont to activate the state’s severe cold weather protocol through noontime Saturday.
People who need assistance or emergency accommodations should call “2-1-1” or check Connecticut’s 211 website that provides a list of resources, such as transportation to a shelter or warming center.
