WESTPORT — A growing community tradition — the Westport Farmers Market’s seed exchange — is planned March 9.

The annual event will take place during the farm market’s regular session Thursday, March 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — or until all seeds are shared. The market is based during winter at Gilbertie’s Herbs and Garden Center, 7 Sylvan Ave.

Visitors are invited to bring seeds saved from their gardens or take home those saved by others. The market’s farmers also will donate seeds from their crops for the community to try at home, according to a market publicity release.

All seeds, except those from invasive species, are welcome.

However, event organizers ask that, in particular, people bring and take home heirloom or organic varieties.

“Collecting, sharing and growing seeds saved by our very own shoppers, farmers and vendors — especially heirloom varieties — involves the community personally in the promotion of local food and flora,” Lori Cochran-Dougall,  the Westport Farmers Market executive director, said in a publicity release.

The seed exchange will include an appearance by Dina Brewster, representing the group Eco59, a farmer-led seed collective.

“I view our work, growing ecotypic seed to restore native plants in the Northeast, as a reminder of all that has been lost and all that we must work to restore,” Brewster said in the release.
