MIDDLETOWN — It took extra innings, but the Fairfield Warde baseball team ended Staples’ state championship hopes, edging the Wreckers, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Palmer Field.

The Mustangs prevailed a 10-inning thriller for the Class LL state title.

Starting pitchers Hiro Wyatt of Staples and Griffin Polley of Warde were stellar before turning things over to the bullpens.

The deadlock was broken when Polley batted in the decisive run as Warde won its second straight state championship.

David Gervasio drove in the lone Staples run.

It was an outstanding season for Staples, which went 16-4 in the regular slate and then defeated Farmington, Newtown, South Windsor and Westhill en route to Saturday’s championship contest.
