WESTPORT — Staples baseball team has won three of its last four games and, in the process, avenged an earlier defeat to rival Greenwich.

Staples edged host Stamford 4-3 last Friday, doubled up host Darien 6-3 Monday, and bounced back from Tuesday’s 11-0 loss at Notre Dame-West Haven with an 11-1 triumph over Greenwich in a home game Wednesday.

The Greenwich game was called in the bottom of the sixth inning due to the mercy rule, although the game did not appear headed in that direction through the first five frames.

In fact, the Cardinals led 1-0 in the third inning before Staples rallied for a 3-1 advantage through five frames. The Wreckers broke out the bats in the sixth, scoring eight runs in the frame.

Jules Cicero socked a grand slam homer, singled and drove in four runs; Cooper Brundige had three hits, including a triple, and drove in three.

Kai Nee pitched five solid innings, scattering six hits and striking out seven while allowing just the one run.

Against Darien it was a different story, with Staples jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first and coasting to the 6-3 win. Andrew Oppenheimer tossed all seven innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs while fanning six batters.

Brundige had four hits and knocked in two runs; Mark Kelly had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run; Nee had a hit and RBI, and Cole Landgraf had two hits in the Darien game.

Staples edged Stamford in an extra-inning contest that went nine frames. Bruce Schlegelmilch pitched five scoreless innings, surrendering just a pair of hits, walking three and striking out one. Ben Cukier tossed four frames, allowing three runs on seven hits, walking one and fanning a trio of hitters.

At the plate against Stamford Cicero had two hits and an RBI, and Landgraf, Vince Vega and Connor Brill all had hits and runs batted in.

Staples, 7-3 overall, is scheduled to host Wilton at 4:30 p.m. Friday. (Game schedules are subject to change; click for the latest CIAC updates.)
