FAIRFIELD — Four local historical organizations have partnered up to present a program series on British raids on Connecticut during the Revolutionary War, with events kicking off this weekend.
The 1779 British Raids Program series will run from Sunday, July 5th to Saturday, July 11th. The series, part of the commemorations of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, is a collaboration of the Fairfield Museum & History Center, the New Haven Museum, the Westport Museum for History and Culture, and the Norwalk Historical Society.
These presentations will explore several raids along the Connecticut coast in July 1779, waged by British commanders in an effort to lure General George Washington from the Hudson River Valley to fight a decisive battle. The full event schedule includes:
- A Day in the Revolution (12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 5th at the New Haven Museum)
- Burning of Fairfield Walking Tour (12 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7th and 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8th, with tours meeting at the Fairfield Museum & History Center).
- Destination Westport: Paths of Patriots Walking Tour (6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7th, beginning at the cemetery on Nyala Farms Road)
- Battle & Burning of Norwalk Commemoration (10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 11th, at the Mill Hill Historic Park)
This marks the first time the four partner organizations have followed the route of the British forces and provided an interactive look at how each town responded to the incursions.
Expanded coverage of Fairfield County cultural events is made possible with support from the Fairfield University Quick Center for the Arts
