
WESTPORT — Staples Field Hockey met Wilton in the quarterfinals of the FCIAC playoffs Saturday morning in the rain at home on Ginny Parker Field with great community support among the raindrops. Staples dominated play out of the gate scoring on a Jess Leon goal late in the first quarter to make it 1-0. The Lady Wreckers followed up with a goal midway through the second quarter when Emma Larit scored off a corner. Staples took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
The second half opened up with more of the same as Staples had goals by Emma. Nahon, Jess Leon and Tyla Ozgen. With Staples leading 5-0 going into the 4th quarter, Wilton showed its resilience. The Warriors mounted a feverish comeback, scoring four unanswered goals to make the score 5-4.
Staples then controlled play in the last minutes, completing the 5-4 win and moving into the semifinals. Staples will meet their traditional field hockey rival Darien in the evening semifinal match at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Brian McMahon High School in Norwalk.
