NEWINGTON–The Stapes football team pulled away in the second half to secure a 37-14 win at Newington of the Central Connecticut Conference on Friday night.
Tyler Clark helped spark the Wreckers’ offense with more than 100 receiving yards, including an electrifying 65-yard reception with just 33 seconds left in the first half and a touchdown to open the second-half scoring.
Staples shook off three first-half turnovers to build a 16-7 lead going into the break.
Quarterback Caleb Smith and running back Alex Fiala ran well with Smith scoring on two rushes.
The Staples defense was strong, holding Newington to one TD in each half. The Wreckers get back to FCIAC action on Friday, Sept. 30 with a visit to Trumbull; kickoff is 7 p.m.
