WESTPORT — They’re taking the show on the road.

That’s what the Westport Country Playhouse is doing with its new mobile unit that will bring theatrical performances to youngsters in grades six through 10.

“Scaredy Kat Presents,” a play by Janine Sobeck Knighton, is the unit’s inaugural presentation, and performances can be booked beginning in January.

The play, according to publicity from the playhouse, deals with issues of adolescence, “while also attempting to destigmatize anxiety and panic disorder.”

Performances, about 45 minutes long, feature a cast of professional actors, set, costumes and special effects, the playhouse says. Following the performance, there is a question-and-answer session with the actors, and a study guide and curriculum will be provided with related classroom activities and games.

The shows can be adapted for a range of different spaces, such as a cafeteria, library or large classroom.

The mobile unit is supported, in part, by a grant from the town of Westport’s American Rescue Plan Act funds and the National Endowment for the Arts.

“The playhouse mobile unit is part of our goal to build sustainable and lasting relationships with our surrounding communities through the art of live theater,” Jenny Nelson, the playhouse director of education and community engagement, and director of the inaugural production, said in the publicity release.
