WESTPORT – Spirits were running high as the Staples boys hockey team took the ice yesterday home in their season opener against Amity. They ratcheted higher after Tyler DiMaio flipped the puck from the edge of the crease past Brandan Smith, Amity’s goalie, for the first score of the game.

Staples lead was short-lived, however, as Amity scored their first goal about five minutes later.

With one unanswered goal in the second period and three in the third, Staples simply could not match the intensity of the Amity attack. Amity was able to get 50 shots on goal, 45 of which were stopped by Aaron Kail, Staples’ indefatigable goalkeeper.

Final: Amity 5 – Staples 1.

Staples next game is at home – Milford Ice – against East Hartford Saturday at 7:30.
