FAIRFIELD — Staples boys basketball made it two FCIAC championships in a row, defeating Ridgefield 62-48 at Fairfield University on Wednesday night.
This was the second game of a Wrecker doubleheader; the Staples girls saw their title hopes dashed by Greenwich, 65-49.
Sam Clachko scored 13 points and played a key role in setting up the offense, including with key defensive plays. to earn MVP honors. Mason Tobias scored 14, Austin Heyer scored 12 and Matty Corrigan 11 in a balanced scoring attack.
The Wreckers led by nine early on but the Tigers clawed back to within a basket, 27-25 at the half. Staples led 47-41 after three quarters and was up just four points midway through the fourth before pulling away.
In the girls game, Greenwich jumped out to an 18-2 lead and was ahead 28-14 at halftime. The lead grew to 19 before Staples whittled it down to 10, but the Wreckers could not get over the hump. Chloe Smith had 22 points and Freya Harvey dropped in 19 to lead the Wrecker offense.
