WOODBRIDGE–Host and No. 4 Amity of Woodbridge beat No. 12 Staples 1-0 in the girls soccer Class LL State Tournament quarterfinals on Saturday.
A first-half tally on Amity’s lone shot on target, midway through the opening half, proved to be enough to end Staples’ title hopes.
“It was an amazing free kick into the top corner,” Staples Coach Barry Beattie said.
This was a disappointing finish for the Wreckers who had the bulk of the chances in this contest.
“We had many shots and played very well. The girls gave their all and went down fighting. I was happy with our performance overall but the result wasn’t to be,” Beattie said. “Credit to Amity for winning and best of luck to them for the next round.:
Amity will challenge FCIAC representative New Canaan, the No. 8 seed, which took down top seed Farmington 2-0. The teams will meet in the semis; date, time and location to be determined.
