WESTPORT–Westport’s two major political parties hold biennial caucuses this month.

Caucuses are mandated by state law and by the town committees themselves.

The purpose of each caucus is to elect members from each of Westport’s nine voting districts. Those members elect officers, collaborate on party strategy, attend monthly meetings, serve on committees, and do the tactical work of getting out the vote leading up to election day.

The Republican Town Committee

The Republican Town Committee met on Tuesday, Jan. 6 in room 201 at Town Hall. Westport Journal reached out to two officers of the Republican Town Committee on Jan. 2 to confirm the details of the caucus. Neither officer responded to the request for information. When asked for the results of the caucus on Jan. 8, John Bolton, the GOP’s district leader from D-9, directed Westport Journal to the Town Clerk.

The Democratic Town Committee

The Democratic Town Committee will host their caucus on Tuesday, Jan. 13, in the auditorium at Westport Town Hall, 110 Myrtle Avenue, at 7:30 p.m. Snow date is Jan. 15.

Michelle Mechanic, Chairman of the Democratic Town Committee, said that the caucus is open to the public and that anyone–Republicans, Democrats, unaffiliated voters–can attend. The vote for members is confined to “currently registered” Democrats, but unaffiliated voters can register as Democrats “as late as the day of the caucus” if they would like to get involved in Democratic party matters.
