WESTPORT–Westport’s eight-term Hartford representative, Jonathan Steinberg, will not run for a ninth term, CT Mirror has reported.
Matthew Mandell, the Executive Director of the Westport-Weston Chamber of Commerce and an RTM member from District 1, has officially declared his candidacy for the seat with a Wednesday filing.
Mandell told Westport Journal that he “has served Westport for 20 years. What I’ve accomplished in Westport will continue in Hartford.” Westport, he said, will “continue to be a great place to live and run a business.”
One of his major priorities is to help Westport maintain “local control of planning” while being an “advocate for affordable housing.” Mandell cites his involvement in Westport’s Affordable Housing Fund, which now has $1.7 million in the bank, as a concrete example of his advocacy.
With Mandell’s experiences with the Connecticut Business and Industry Association and the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities, he considers himself “well-versed in what’s going on in Hartford.” Becoming Westport’s representative in Hartford will be ”an easy transition for me.”

Matt would be a great rep for Westport. Driven, knowledgeable and always has Westport’s best interests in mind.
Congratulations to Jon for his long run in the state House of Representatives. His advocacy for his constituents will be missed.
Thank you Jonathan for years of service! Looking forward to this very important year as well!
Jonathan Steinberg is a wonderful man who takes care of his constituents.
