FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield University Art Museum will debut a major loan exhibition this month as part of its series of cultural and artistic events celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States.
For Which It Stands will be on view between Jan. 23rd and July 25th, and feature 75 works by a diverse range of artists ranging from the early 20th century to the present day — all with the common theme of depictions of the American flag.
An opening night lecture by Aaron Weinstein, Assistant Professor of Politics, will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 22nd at the Quick Center for the Arts and discuss the shifting meaning of the flag based on context, political use, and personal interpretation; this lecture will also be available by livestream. This event will be followed by an opening reception at 6:30 p.m.
“This exhibition is an opportunity for all of us to examine the narratives that have shaped our country, particularly those that have been overlooked or challenged,” said Carey Mack Weber, executive director of the Fairfield University Art Museum and exhibition curator. “Through these artworks, we invite visitors to engage deeply with the pressing issues of justice, representation, and unity—issues that are as relevant today as they were when our nation was founded.”
Several programs will accompany the exhibition throughout the winter and spring, including gallery talks, lectures, short film screenings, and family-friendly programming. For more information, click here.
