Letter in support of Abby Tolan for Westport BOE
I am writing to offer my enthusiastic endorsement of Abby Tolan for the Westport Board of Education. As a former board member, I am familiar with the demands of board service and the characteristics needed to serve effectively. Abby possesses the rare combination of deep personal commitment, policy knowledge, and, most importantly, the collaborative temperament necessary to serve all our students effectively. In a time when educational challenges are complex (to say the least) we need a representative who prioritizes outcomes over ideology, and that person is Abby Tolan.
Abby’s commitment to Special Education is particularly compelling and deeply rooted in her experience as both a parent and an active advocate. At a time when SpEd funding is in question, this is when it is most critical to ensure we have an advocate in place. Abby understands that supporting students with diverse learning needs is not a matter of compliance, but a moral imperative and an investment in our community’s future. We value such diversity of ability as a town by supporting all kinds of organizations like the former Porch at Christie’s and Remarkable Theater. Abby will champion policies that ensure every child receives appropriate, robust, and timely resources, allowing them to reach their full potential within our schools, and beyond. Her dedication ensures that our Special Education programs will remain excellent and accessible.
Furthermore, Abby is acutely aware of the urgent crisis surrounding student mental health and well-being. She recognizes that academic achievement is inseparable from emotional stability. Her platform calls for strengthening school counseling services, integrating social-emotional learning into the curriculum, and ensuring that our educators and administrators are equipped with the resources to identify and support students struggling with anxiety, stress, and other mental health challenges. Abby Tolan will be a powerful voice for a holistic approach to education that protects the health of our children.
Finally, Abby’s most critical strength is her unique ability to work across party lines and build consensus. She approaches every discussion with an open mind, seeking common ground rather than political victory. The role of the Board of Education is to govern, not to posture, and Abby has a proven track record of listening respectfully, analyzing data collaboratively, and making pragmatic decisions that benefit the entire school district. Her presence on the Board will foster a more productive, civil, and functional governing body, ensuring that the focus remains solely on the well-being and academic success of Westport’s children.
Abby Tolan is not just a candidate; she is a dedicated, thoughtful, and unifying leader. I urge every Westport resident, regardless of political affiliation, to join me in voting for Abby Tolan for the Board of Education.
Sincerely,
Christina Torres, Ed.D.

Dear Friends and Neighbors,
I am writing to share my enthusiastic support for Abby Tolan, who is seeking to return to the Board of Education.
I’ve had the privilege of knowing Abby for the past three years through our work on the Special Education PTA and as a fellow parent and advocate. In that time, I’ve seen firsthand her deep commitment to our schools and her tireless dedication to ensuring that every child has what they need to succeed. Abby leads with integrity, empathy, and a strong understanding of how thoughtful decisions can strengthen our entire district.
Under Abby’s leadership, our schools have reached record-setting third-grade reading scores, supported by years of advocacy for state-of-the-art literacy interventions.
Abby has championed unanimously approved budgets, the Long Lots School project, and the relocation of the Stepping Stones Preschool building—all of which show her belief in strategic, long-term investment in our community’s future. She also played a key role in codifying a student code of conduct that promotes fairness and consistency across our schools.
With her background as both an educator and a special education advocate, Abby brings invaluable perspective to the table. She listens, collaborates, and acts with compassion and insight. We are incredibly fortunate to have someone with such a deep well of knowledge and care for all learners serving on our Board of Education.
Abby Tolan is a voice for inclusion, academic excellence, and balanced leadership. She works tirelessly to ensure that every student—regardless of background or ability—has the opportunity to thrive.
Local elections matter. Please join me in supporting Abby Tolan for the Board of Education on Nov. 4.
