Editor’s note: following is an opinion submitted by Westporter Patra Kanchanagom.
I am writing this letter in support of Abby Tolan’s campaign to return to the Westport Board of Education. At a time when the idea that diversity is our nation’s superpower seems to be under attack, Abby is the only candidate in a crowded field who has demonstrated a deep commitment to inclusivity and belonging for every child in our schools. She was one of the first PTA DEIB school reps and has been an active member of the TEAM Parent Work Group and Book Club for years. She consistently shows up to support marginalized communities in our town, and she is always willing to listen and learn. Now, more than ever, we need someone on the Board who will support and defend these ideals. Abby is that person.
I have known Abby for a long time: from our days on the PTA at KHS to cheering on our kids at their graduation from Staples. You know how Mr. Rogers told us to “look for the helpers”? Abby is the type of human he was talking about. Abby cares deeply about every child in our schools, whatever their struggles may be. I consider myself lucky to know Abby’s big heart and empathetic spirit. Our town is lucky to have her on the Board of Education. Please vote for Abby on Nov 4 so that she can continue this important work.
