WESTPORT — A local smoke shop, raided by local police and state agents Tuesday, was illegally selling marijuana products, vapes and other unlicensed merchandise, according to the report.

The Savvy Smoker at 940 Post Road East was under investigation, police said in a Wednesday statement, after officials received citizen complaints alleging the shop was believed to be selling illegal substances.

Westport police, executing a search warrant Tuesday, were joined by drug control agents from the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection in seizing “a significant number of illegal items,” according to the report.

The shop does not have a state license to sell recreational or medical marijuana, police said.

In addition, Westport zoning officials in 2021 adopted a ban on the sale of recreational marijuana locally, although such sales have been permitted for people over the age of 21 in other communities as of last January. In November, the P&Z took the extra step of banning any new smoke shops from opening in town — although the Savvy Smoker appears to have been in business as of July, prior to the ban on new smoke shops, according to state records.

Among the illegal merchandise seized during the raid, police said, were “hundreds of jars of pre-rolled marijuana cigarettes and vape cartridges, containers of concentrated resin, synthetic cannabinoids, dozens of packages of THC gummies, marijuana and packaging materials.”

The concentration of THC — the primary ingredient in cannabis contributing to the “high” users feel — also “exceeded the limit allowed in a hemp products and/or were not in child- or tamper-resistant packaging,” according to the report.

Police did not say whether any arrests have been made to date, but confirmed the investigation is continuing.
