WESTPORT — A Southbury man was charged last week with setting a “large” fire outside the Saugatuck Railroad Station more than five years ago.
William Monahan, 52, was charged June 6 with reckless burning, first-degree criminal mischief and second-degree threatening.
Police were dispatched to investigate a report of a fire at the Saugatuck rail depot shortly before 2:30 a.m. April 19, 2019.
Arriving at the scene, officers found what was described as a large fire burning outside the terminal and a man — identified as William Monahan — who was “watching” it burn, police said.
Although police determined that Monahan was responsible for the fire, “due to his mental state” he was transported to a hospital for evaluation, according to the report.
On June 6, State Police troopers, acting on a warrant that had been issued for Monahan’s arrest, took him into custody and turned him over to Westport police.
Monahan was formally charged and held on $100,000 bond for arraignment the next day at state Superior Court in Stamford.
