WESTPORT — A local man charged by police last week with possessing child pornography was an employee of the Westport Weston Family YMCA who, according to a source, worked in the Y’s “Kids Club.”
In a statement issued to the Westport Journal on Monday afternoon, Anjali McCormick, the YMCA’s CEO, confirmed that Brian Myers, a 29-year-old Westport resident, was a YMCA employee who was “immediately terminated” after his June 28 arrest.
Myers was charged June 28 with third-degree possession of child pornography after local police launched an investigation when they received a tip two days earlier from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
McCormick’s statement reads, in part: “We were deeply dismayed and disturbed to recently learn of the arrest of Brian Myers, a now-former staff member, who has been charged with possession of child pornography.
“When we learned of his arrest, we immediately terminated his employment. At this stage of the investigation, we have no reason to believe that any of the alleged pornography involved members or participants of our Y. We will continue to support the Westport Police Department in its investigation.”
While the statement does not mention the YMCA department where Myers worked, a source told the Journal he worked in the “Kids Club.”
“The safety and well-being of children in our care always has been and always will be a top priority. We are committed to providing a safe environment to every person who enters our doors — most importantly, children who are entrusted to our care. We have a series of measures in place to keep kids safe,” McCormick said.
McCormick’s full statement about Myers’ arrest, and the measures the Westport Weston Family YMCA takes to vet the background of its staff, appears at the end of this article.
Police on Monday said the investigation into the Myers case is ongoing.
Westport police, after receiving an NCMEC “cybertip” on June 26, launched a probe into a town resident’s allegedly “questionable search history on a shared computer,” according to the report.
The tip also identified the person allegedly responsible for the searches as Brian Myers, police said.
After police detectives visited Myers at his residence and questioned him about the allegations, Myers “admitted to possessing child pornography and provided his cell phones and laptops which contained the images,” according to the report.
Police said that a search of the devices turned over by Myers “confirmed that they contained suspected child pornography.”
Myers was placed under arrest and formally charged at Police Department headquarters. He was held until posting $30,000 bond, and is scheduled to be arraigned July 5 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
