Scenes from the fireworks show Thursday over Compo Beach.

WESTPORT — All eyes will be focused skyward as bombs burst in the air Tuesday night for the Independence Day fireworks show over Compo Beach, but police will be keeping their eyes on the ground with heavy traffic expected to and from the holiday celebration.

The annual fireworks show, sponsored by the Westport Police Athletic League, is scheduled to launch at dusk Tuesday, July 2, over Compo, with a rain date of Wednesday, July 3.

Vehicle and pedestrian traffic to and from the event will have an impact on roads south of Greens Farms Road, between Compo Road South and Hillspoint Road, police said in advising spectators to arrive at the beach early to ease congestion.

Police have issued the following guidance for traffic heading to the beach before the pyrotechnics display and afterward:

Before the sky show …

  • Daytime visitors to Compo Beach, who do not have fireworks tickets, must move their vehicles from the parking lots by 4 p.m.
  • Only those vehicles with fireworks passes displayed from their rearview mirrors will be allowed to remain. Others will be ticketed or towed.
  • Beach parking will reopen at approximately 5 p.m. for ticketed spectators.

Ticket holders …

  • Access to the beach will be via Compo Road South only. Hillspoint Road, south of Greens Farms Road, will be open only to residents who live south of that intersection.
  • Attendees should display tickets prominently in their vehicles so they can be seen clearly.
  • All ticket holders must be at Compo Beach by 9 p.m. No vehicular traffic will be allowed south of the Minute Man statue after that time.
  • Parking for people with disabilities is available between the beach cannons and the pavilion. Spaces are limited and will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

No tickets …

  • Vehicles without a ticket will not be allowed to travel any closer to Compo Beach than the Minute Man statue.
  • People traveling to the beach via Uber, Lyft or taxi will be directed straight past the Minute Man statue on Compo Road South. From there, they will have to walk from Compo Road South and Soundview Drive to the beach.
  • Return rides via Uber, etc., will not be allowed until after 11 p.m. because of one-way traffic leaving the beach area.

After the fireworks …

  • Just before the display ends, two-way traffic will be suspended on Compo Beach Road and Compo Road South to the intersection of Greens Farms Road. Two lanes of northbound traffic on those streets will be enforced until the beach is cleared.
  • Police urge drivers in the Compo Beach area to exercise caution before and after the fireworks since congestion is anticipated from heavy vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
