WESTPORT — A 36-year-old man, who told police he was trick-or-treating with his family, was spotted via surveillance cameras trying to break into a local home Halloween night, police said.
Scott Cormier, of Torrington, was charged second-degree attempted burglary and third-degree criminal trespass in connection with the incident.
A local homeowner called police about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday to report a “suspicious” man, detected by the home’s video surveillance equipment, could be seen apparently trying to break into the house, according to the report.
The resident, who was not home at the time, provided a description of the man and his clothing to police, based on the video images.
Officers, dispatched to the scene, found a man — later identified as Cormier — matching the description, walking down the street.
When questioned, according to the report, Cormier told police he was “trick-or-treating with family,” even though he was alone.
A review of the homeowner’s video, police said, showed Cormier walking around to the rear of the house and trying to enter. The dwelling was locked and the suspect was unable to gain entry, police said.
Cormier’s bond was set at $25,000 and he is scheduled for a Nov. 15 appearance at state Superior Court in Stamford.
