WESTPORT — A resident apparently scared off a would-be burglar trying to break into a home early Friday in the Compo Beach area, police said.

Police were dispatched to a beach area home about 3:50 a.m. Friday after receiving a “911” emergency call from a resident reporting that an intruder was attempting to gain entry.

As officers arrived at the scene, a vehicle believed to be the suspect’s was fleeing from the scene, and as of midday Friday had eluded police.

Nothing appears to have been stolen from the home, police said, and the incident remains under investigation.

In view of the attempted break-in, police issued the following home-safety tips:

Secure the home:

  • Lock all doors and windows before leaving, even if for a short time.
  • Install deadbolts on doors and ensure sliding doors have locks or rods to prevent forced entry.

Use electronic monitoring, surveillance and safety devices:

  • Consider installing “smart” security cameras and motion-detection lights.
  • Use timers for indoor lights to give the impression that someone is home.

Use discretion on social media:

  • Avoid online posting of travel plans or information that a home will be unoccupied.
  • Holiday photos, etc., should be posted after returning home.

Protect packages:

  • Use package tracking and request delivery notifications.
  • Have packages delivered to a secure location, such as a neighbor’s house or a designated pickup spot.

Notify a trusted neighbor or friend:

  • Let them know travel plans and ask if they can keep an eye on your property.

Notify police:

  • Report any suspicious activity to police immediately.
