WESTPORT — Back-to-back crashes on a local stretch of Interstate 95 — involving a total of four vehicles — kept emergency crews busy and snarled traffic during stormy weather Tuesday afternoon.

The first accident — between a tractor-trailer truck, a pickup and a sedan — was reported on southbound I-95, between Exits 18 and 17, about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the report by Assistant Fire Chief Brett Kirby.

No injuries among the vehicles’ three occupants were reported by firefighters dispatched to the scene.

However, there was “a significant leak” of diesel fuel from the tractor-trailer, according to the report. Firefighters were able to prevent the runoff from spilling into a nearby storm drain, and improvised a method to prevent the remaining 75 gallons of fuel from leaking onto the highway by improvising a transfer to the truck’s saddle tanks.

Firefighters were assisted with the fuel spill by personnel from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

A Westport EMS crew and State Police troopers also were on scene.

A box truck flipped over the concrete barrier in an I-95 construction zone, between southbound Exits 17 and 16, later Tuesday afternoon. Two occupants of the truck suffered what firefighters called non-life-threatening injuries.

Before firefighters finished clearing the scene of the first crash, another accident was reported shortly after 5 p.m. between Exits 17 and 16 southbound.

A box truck flipped on its side over a concrete barrier within the highway’s construction zone, according to Assistant Chief Kirby’s report.

Both of the truck’s occupants were able to leave the wreck on their own, but suffered injuries that appeared to be non-life-threatening, according to the report.

No other vehicles were involved.

A Westport EMS crew and State Police also assisted at the scene.

DEEP personnel drained the truck’s remaining fuel in preparation for the vehicle to be lifted back across the highway barrier.
