WESTPORT — Mystery shrouds the disappearance of a man whose SUV was abandoned — the driver’s keys, cellphones and empty wallet inside — along the local stretch of Interstate 95 nearly two weeks ago.
The 2022 Ford Explorer found Dec. 30 between I-95’s southbound exits 18 and 17 in Westport belongs to Errol Whyte, a 63-year-old Stamford resident, according to Stamford police.
Whyte was last seen about 6:30 p.m. Dec. 29 leaving his son’s Bridgeport home as he planned to return to his home at 16 Gregory St. in Stamford, police said.
Inside the red SUV — with Connecticut license plate, BH78995 — police said they found Whyte’s keys, two cellphones and wallet, although there was no money or driver’s license in the wallet.
The vehicle did not break down or run out of gas, a Stamford police spokesman told News 12, which also reported that I-95’s traffic cameras provided no evidence since they do not record.
Whyte is described as about 6-feet-1-inch tall, weighing approximately 220 pounds, and at the time of his disappearance was wearing a black-collared jacket, white long-sleeve, button-up shirt, khaki pants, a black fedora and black shoes, according to the missing person report.
His disappearance is being treated as “suspicious,” according to Stamford police, who expanded their search beyond Fairfield County to the tri-state area.
Westport police’s only involvement in the case so far, according to a spokesman, has been to search areas immediately around the abandoned SUV.
Stamford police ask that anyone who might have information about Whyte’s whereabouts or saw activity around his SUV on the Westport stretch of I-95 to contact Investigators Robert Daly or James Muhlbauer at 203-977-4639 or the department’s main phone number at 203-977-4958.
