WESTPORT — Police have not yet released information about the condition of a driver seriously injured in a Thursday night rollover on the Sherwood Island Connector, or any explanation of how the incident occurred.

The crash closed the connector several hours overnight as the Westport Police Accident Investigation Team, with assistance from the Fairfield Police Accident Investigation Team, probed the crash, Westport police Lt. Eric Wood said late Thursday.

Someone familiar with the crash scene told the Westport Journal on Saturday the car involved was a convertible, and was driven by a young man who apparently wasn’t wearing a seat belt.

The passenger, who suffered minor injuries, was wearing a seat belt.

Police said the driver had been ejected from the vehicle and suffered life-threatening injuries.

The person familiar with the crash said the car came to a rest on a grassy area near the Walgreen’s parking lot.

Damage to a median at the end of the connector was visible. Plants were bent over, Belgian blocks knocked loose, and an ornamental rock appears to have been struck.

A curb at the edge of the grassy area beyond also was damaged.

In the roadway extending from a northbound lane of Post Road East, investigators apparently spray-painted dashed lines marking the path of the car and perhaps the orientation of wheels remaining on the pavement. More spray-paint was seen on the grassy area, where it appears four tire indentations, perhaps from the vehicle landing hard, were visible.

A traffic sign for the turn patterns for the two lanes from the connector at Post Road East had been knocked down and damaged. Shards of broken light lenses and splinters of plastic trim were visible by the road and in the grass.

Westport police said the rollover occurred about 9:30 p.m. The connector was closed several hours.

The driver was taken to Norwalk Hospital. The passenger and also was taken to Norwalk Hospital, Woods said late Thursday.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call the Westport Police Department at 203-341-6000.
