WESTPORT — Eighteen years after burglarizing a Post Road West office building, a 46-year-old man has been taken into custody, police said.
Peter Briand, who now lives in Woodbury, is charged with third-degree burglary and sixth-degree larceny in connection with the case.
He was taken into custody Nov. 8, a week before the 18th anniversary of the crime, which according to the police report took place on the night of Nov. 15, 2003.
Police were alerted to an intrusion at 208 Post Road West after a burglar alarm was triggered shortly after 8:30 p.m. Nov. 15, 2003, according to the report.
Officers dispatched to the scene could not find an intruder at the time, although a search of the premises revealed a burglary had taken place, police said.
The suspect, who apparently gained access via a window, left behind fingerprints. After analysis, police said, those fingerprints were matched with those of Peter Briand, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
However, police said Briand moved to South Carolina shortly after the incident and only recently returned to Connecticut. He was taken into custody Nov. 8 by State Police, acting on the arrest warrant, and turned over to Westport police.
Briand was released after posting $1,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges Nov. 17 at state Superior Court in Stamford.

If the Westport Police or the Connecticut State Police knew his whereabouts in South Carolina and did not extradite him. The case should be dismissed for failure to prosecute. Additionally there may be Statute of Limitations issues.
