Marjorie Cogswell Santella, age 91, a long time resident of Westport, passed away on December 9, 2025 in Siesta Key Florida. She was the daughter of Lester and Evelyn Godfrey Cogswell. She was born on February 19, 1934.
Marjorie grew up in Westport and attended Westport schools and later returned as an educator and administrative assistant. Her deep adoration for children made her beloved by her students and colleagues alike.
Marge had three children with her husband Louis Santella, a longtime owner of Saugatuck’s iconic Riverside Barber Shop. Marge proudly embraced Lou’s Italian heritage in many ways from her characteristic collection of Pinocchios to their unforgettable trips to Italy. She and Lou were warmly regarded in the community as active members of the Sons of Italy as well as organizers of the Westport Festival Italiano.
There was nothing Marge cherished more than her family, but the Florida sun was a close second. In 2003, she and Lou retired to Siesta Key, where they were surrounded by close friends and visiting family. Marge was an avid fan of the theatre, a treasured member of her community, and was never one to turn down a game of Rummikub by the pool.
Marge was also blessed with six grandchildren with whom she created countless beautiful memories at the beach and on many trips to Disney World. She lived Florida life to the fullest and brought everyone else along for the ride. In her later years, Marge could often be found at the Siesta Key North bridge, where she enjoyed the simple pleasure of sitting with her lunch to watch the pelicans dive for fish in the channel.
Marge is survived by her son Mark, daughters-in-law Joanne, Emily, and Rose: grandchildren Adriana, Amy, Christopher, William, Alyse, and LJ: great grandchildren Liam and Millie Jean: and sister Loretta Hornyak. She is predeceased by her husband Louis: her sons Michael and Louis: and her sisters Nancy Soyak and Carol Leas. A celebration of life will be held in the spring at Assumption Church in Westport.
