_______________________________
Arthur Brovender, M.D., 92, of Boca Raton, Fla., and formerly of Westport, loving husband of Paula Brovender, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2023.
Arthur was born on Aug. 9, 1930, in the Bronx, N.Y., to the late Max and Ida Brovender.
Arthur attended Christopher Columbus High School and continued with his education receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree, with Phi Beta Kappa honors, from New York University in 1952. After graduating, he realized his calling was to become a physician, and he attended medical school at L’Université Libre de Bruxelles, earning a Doctor of Medicine, with distinction, in 1958.
He completed his internship in general surgery at Norwalk Hospital. Afterwards, Arthur specialized in orthopaedic surgery, finishing his surgical residency at a variety of hospitals throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn, N.Y.
It was during his children’s surgical residency at the House of St. Giles the Cripple in Brooklyn, N.Y., when he met his wife, Paula, in 1962 on a blind date, and they celebrated 59 wonderful years of marriage.
Throughout his medical career, he held many memberships as a fellow in medical societies (International College of Surgeons, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, New York Academy of Medicine, American College of Surgeons and the American Geriatrics Society), and was a charter member of the Eastern Orthopaedic Association. He was a regent in the State of Connecticut International College of Surgeons and held the position of president of the Norwalk Medical Society in 1978. His knowledge and love of medicine was further shared with others as he taught at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, as well as the Police and Fire departments in both Norwalk and Westport.
In 1963, Arthur opened his private practice and joined the medical staff at Norwalk Hospital. It was during this time that Arthur proudly served his country in the Army Reserves; he was honorably discharged as a captain in the medical corps in August 1965. He served as the chief of orthopaedics at Norwalk Hospital from 1981-85.
It was in Connecticut where Paula and Arthur settled and had their two daughters, Leslie and Lisa.
In addition to being a well-respected and renowned surgeon, Dr. Brovender enjoyed playing golf, tennis, skiing, hunting and fishing. He was an avid photographer and history buff, and enjoyed traveling with family and friends.
Arthur was passionate about learning and continued to take classes throughout his life. His religious observance played an important part in his life, and he served as president of Temple Shalom in Norwalk from 1976-79.
After retiring from his private practice of 37 years in 2000, he continued to provide medical service to the Social Security Administration as an independent medical expert on orthopaedic cases throughout the United States.
For the last 20 years of his life, he enjoyed retirement at Boca West Country Club, where he served on the Board of Governors and numerous committees.
As a consummate people person he made many wonderful new friends during this time of his life.
Arthur was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Stanley (Patricia) Brovender. In addition to his wife, Arthur is survived by his children, Leslie Serena and Lisa (Arthur) Hayes; his six grandchildren and step-grandchildren, Max, Malisia, Rebecca, Olivia, William and James; niece, Dana Parillo, and nephews, Matthew Brovender and David Brovender.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Feb. 24, at 1 p.m., at Temple Shalom, 259 Richards Ave., Norwalk. Burial will follow at the Temple Israel Cemetery behind Beth Israel Cemetery, 225 Richards Ave., Norwalk. The family will be sitting shiva on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 6-8 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 26, from 1-4 p.m.
People wishing to honor Arthur can make donations to Temple Shalom or the Anti-Defamation League.
