WESTPORT — With a stretch of scorching weather bearing down on the region, both local and state emergency-management officials are activating cooling centers and urging people to take precautions.
Following Gov. Ned Lamont’s declaration that the state’s “Extreme Hot Weather Protocol” would be in force as of noon Tuesday, Westport’s emergency-management team announced that five local cooling center will be available for those needing to take shelter from the expected high heat and humidity.
People who need help during the heat wave or guidance about finding accommodations can call the state’s “211” information phone line or visit 211ct.org.
In a “Hazardous Weather Outlook” forecast in effect through Sunday, the National Weather Service warns that high temperatures are expected to reach at least 90 degrees every day during that period, and factored with humidity, it could feel as though it’s 100 degrees or more.
“As the temperature heats up over the next few days, it’s important for everyone to take necessary precautions, especially for the elderly, the very young, and people with respiratory ailments who are more susceptible to the effects of high temperatures,” Deputy Fire Chief Matthew Cohen, the town’s deputy emergency-management director, said in a statement Monday.
