WESTPORT — That taxing time of year looms, and to help ease the stress of completing IRS 1040 forms and assorted other documents, the town again is offering a free tax-preparation assistance program.

The program, provided through a partnership of the town’s Department of Human Services and VITA/IRS Volunteer Tax Assistance Program, provides counseling for local senior citizens and low- to moderate-income households, according to officials.

Appointments, starting Jan. 22 through April 15, can be made in-person or online. To sign up, call 860-590-8910 or click here.

Free, in-person tax counseling will take place at Town Hall, 110 Myrtle Ave., and the Westport Center for Senior Activities, 21 Imperial Ave. Sessions at Town Hall can be scheduled from 1-7 p.m. Mondays, and at the senior center from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesdays and 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursdays.

Those planning to meet with the tax advisors must have the following documents:

Identification: Government-issued photo ID, Social Security or ITIN numbers for taxpayers and dependents and bank account/routing numbers (blank check preferable) if expecting a refund.

All 2023 income records: W-2 form from employer, 1099 forms for bank interest, stock dividends, retirement distributions and broker statements, SSA1099 form if Social Security benefits were paid, 1099G form for unemployment compensation payments and W-2G form for gambling winnings.

Other documents: If itemizing deductions, receipts for expenses such as taxes paid (real estate, vehicle) and charitable contributions, verification of original purchase price of sold assets (home, stocks) and 1095-A form if health insurance was from the Access Health Connecticut marketplace.

Copies of 2022 IRS forms are also strongly advised to help guide advisors preparing the ’23 documents, officials said.
