WESTPORT — Two young poets, celebrating in verse the beauties of nature, have been selected as winners of the annual poetry contest sponsored by the Westport Garden Club.
Winners of the contest are Tessa Lederer, 10, a fourth grader for her poem, “Forever Awake,” and Katya Bank, 14, a ninth grader for her poem, “Fresh Spring Day.” This year’s theme was “I Spy with My Little Eye, Something Green Outside — Celebrating Our Green World.”
An awards ceremony for the contest winners is planned at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 28, at the library, 20 Jesup Road. The contest was co-sponsored by the Westport Arts Advisory Committee and the library.
The poets also will read their poems at the event, which is open to the public at no charge. Afterward, Westport Poet Laureate Jessica Noyes McEntee will lead a workshop where attendees will be invited to write their own poems inspired by natural materials provided by the Westport Garden Club.
The poems by the two Westport winners also have won first place statewide in their grade levels and have advanced to the New England Garden Clubs regional contest. The region’s final selections will then be considered for National Garden Club Awards.
