STAMFORD – Coming in with a four-game winning streak, the Staples Wreckers proved that streak was no fluke and extended it to five in a row with a win over the Westhill Vikings.
Senior captain Tanner Connors tallied the Wreckers first TD early in the first quarter, running it in from about 10 yards out to give Staples a lead they’d never relinquish. Fellow captain and senior Quarterback Ryan Thompson had another spectacular day through the air, passing for touchdowns in the first quarter to junior Tyler Clark and favorite target Nick Armentano, giving Staples a 21-0 lead before fifteen minutes had elapsed.
The seniors continued to excel as Thompson found Armentano once more in the second quarter and senior receiver Miles Scarfo in the third. For the day, Thompson threw four TDs and no interceptions. Junior tailback Preston Norris ran for a touchdown late in the fourth.
On defense, Staples allowed one score — a touchdown late in the second quarter. Led by senior Captain George Engels, the Staples defense has been stingy of late.
Staples will now return home for their final regular-season game Friday at 7 p.m. at Paul Lane Field to take on the 4-4 Ridgefield Tigers in what will surely be a major game with playoffs on the horizon.
